Guide to Calculating Value Added Tax (VAT) in Indonesia

Almost every transaction for goods and services we perform in Indonesia involves Value Added Tax, more commonly known as VAT (or PPN in Indonesia). Whether you're dining at a restaurant, buying electronic devices, or subscribing to digital services, VAT is a component that affects the total price consumers must pay. Our VAT Calculator makes it easy for you to separate the base price of goods from the tax amount.

What is the Latest VAT Rate in Indonesia?

In accordance with the Tax Harmonization Law (UU HPP), the VAT rate in Indonesia has undergone adjustments:

  • •Since April 1, 2022, the VAT rate increased from 10% to 11%.
  • •This rate is planned to increase again to 12% no later than January 1, 2025.
  • This calculator defaults to 11%, but you can change it according to your needs or the latest applicable rules.

    Inclusive Price vs. Exclusive VAT

It is crucial to understand how a price is displayed by a seller:

  • •Exclusive VAT (Add-on): The listed price is the base price. You must add 11% to that price to know the total payment.
  • Formula: Total = Base Price + (Base Price x 11%)
  • •Inclusive VAT (Include): The listed price already includes tax. Buyers often want to know the actual original price of the item before tax.
  • Base Price Formula: Total / 1.11

Types of Goods Not Subject to VAT

Not all goods are subject to VAT. Certain groups of goods/services are exempt or not subject to VAT, such as:

  • •Basic necessity goods (rice, eggs, vegetables, etc.).
  • •Medical health services, education services, and social services.
  • •Money, gold bars for foreign exchange reserves, and securities.
  • Importance of Tax Invoices for Business Owners

For Taxable Persons (PKP), collecting VAT is an obligation that must be accompanied by the issuance of a Tax Invoice. The VAT you pay when buying raw materials is called Input VAT, while the VAT you collect from buyers is called Output VAT. The difference between the two is the amount of tax you must deposit with the state.

How to Use the VAT Calculator

Simply enter your transaction amount. If the price does not already include tax, leave the "Price Already Includes Tax" checkbox unchecked. If the price you entered is the total receipt price that already has tax in it, check that box. The calculator will automatically display details of the Base Price, VAT Value, and Final Total.

    ? Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the current VAT rate in Indonesia?

Since April 2022, the generally applicable VAT rate is 11%. However, the government plans to increase it to 12% in early 2025.

Q What is the difference between VAT and Luxury Goods Sales Tax (PPnBM)?

VAT is charged on almost every good and service in general. PPnBM is an additional tax charged on luxury category goods such as luxury cars or certain jewelry.

Q Why does a restaurant receipt say PB1 instead of VAT?

Tax at restaurants (usually 10%) is technically a Certain Goods and Services Tax (PBJT) collected by the Local Government, not VAT which is collected by the Central Government through the DGT.

Q How to manually calculate the price before 11% VAT?

The way is to divide the total price by 1.11. For example: If a shirt price of $111,000 already includes VAT, the base price is $111,000 / 1.11 = $100,000.

Q Is online shopping subject to VAT?

Yes, since 2020, imported digital products (such as Netflix, Spotify, Steam) and transactions through e-commerce are subject to 11% VAT collected by the platform organizers.
